Compline Wine Bar, Restaurant, and Merchant – An Exciting New Wine Bar In Downtown Napa

When visiting downtown Napa, there is an impressive wine bar, restaurant and retail shop called Compline Wine that is so unassuming; it will highly surprise you. It is tucked away from the main street area among several shops, near the new Archer Hotel. The front of the building is simplistic, and there is an unawareness of the culinary and wine adventure that is about to unfold once you walk thru the front doors.

Small, unassuming entrance
Tucked away amoung other store fronts – it’s behind the entrance to the Charlie Palmer restaurant (Archer Hotel)

Upon entering, you instantly see the extensive variety of wines and sparkling wines displayed, you’re now aware that you are about to enjoy wines that are on a different level than the usual selections.

Note the sign that says “Best Bubbles in Town” – This makes Always5Star very happy! Cheers!

The inside of the bar and restaurant is an upscale, sleek design yet cozy as well.

The reason that you will have a more elevated experience is that Compline is the conception of two Sommeliers. Co-founder Matt Stamp was awarded the coveted Master Sommelier and is only one of 249 in the world today. I first came upon my understanding of what a Master Sommelier was when watching the movie “Somm”. If you haven’t seen this movie, I highly recommend watching it! In addition to this, he also was the master sommelier for the French Laundry. His partner Ryan Stetins worked for the famed chef Charlie Trotter. With such a breadth of knowledge between the two, you feel confident that the wine selections will be superb.

The wines available are diverse – with a nod to local as well as international

The Dining Experience:

I was grateful to be with a group for lunch, and we enjoyed the following menu and selections. Chef Yancy Windsperger supervises the Compline kitchen and seasonal cuisine to highlight and endorse locally sourced food and to pair the dishes with wine. Chef Windsperger comes with extensive experience as he is an alum of Spago, Morimoto, and The Bazaar by José Andrés.

Here is a pictorial journey of my lunch this day. I hope these pictures will demonstrate how fantastic this meal was!

The Wine Experience:

Every wine lover will appreciate that Compline servers have the passion and knowledge to suggest the ideal wines for your meal. Our server educated us on the wine he selected for us and why it was perfect with the menu. He also gave us a brief history of the winery and suggested tasting notes.

5StarTip🌟:

Compline wine offers several different types of classes. Even if you are a beginner, you will find that they have sommeliers who will be sure to provide the knowledge that will get you off to a great start. Classes begin as little as $35. Note: It is important to make reservations in advance. For more information: Compline Wine Classes

Our suggested wine for this lunch:

De Sante Wine

De Sante Wine – Napa Valley

The Old Vines
2013

De Sante is an organic wine that is dry-farmed without chemicals or sprays since the 1950’s. Husband and wife, Katharine and David DeSante are the owners. They are winemakers that started their brand with a desire to work together in 2001 to produce an extraordinary wine.

Tasting Notes:

Toasted almond, green apple, pear, a light nod to lemon and lime, basil, and light acidic finish. Fermented in neutral oak barrels, you have a slight awareness of vanilla and nutmeg.

What I found intriguing is that the majority of bottles they offer are between $15 to $30.

A fantastic opportunity for Napa residents and visitors to purchase a bottle at a reasonable price, and experiment with discoveries that they would otherwise be unaware of. It just points to the fact that the right wine does not have to be expensive.

5StarTip🌟:

You can purchase the bottle from their retail shelves/selections and pay a corkage fee to enjoy in the restaurant or at the bar.

Final Thoughts:

Compline Wine Bar is not your typical wine bar. It’s uniqueness coupled with the extensive background that the owners and chef have, create a wine and culinary experience that stands apart from the typical wine bar. I feel confident in saying that you will leave with having not only a satisfying culinary experience, but you will have a new education in the wine that you enjoyed. The staff is exceptional in assisting with making your dining educational as well as enjoyable. An Always5Star Cheers to Compline Wine Bar – Restaurant – Merchant! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

5StarTip🌟:

Stay at the Hyatt Andaz Napa! It is within walking distance of the Compline Wine Bar and a fabulous place to stay!
