My sister-in-law and I wanted to travel to Switzerland and we planned for nine days to try to see as much of the beauty that Switzerland has to offer. One of our dream destinations was Lugano, known for its gorgeous lake views. In researching places to stay, we studied many internet sites to get a feel for the best 5-star luxury resort to stay. After many hours of investigation, we selected Villa Principe Leopoldo as we felt to would meet all our needs.

I will never forget the day when we drove up to the entrance and first saw this magnificent hotel. It is everything I hoped and imagined it to be. The first thought that came to mind was “luxurious”. After checking in, we strolled out to the fountain courtyard patio in the back. We both gasped in delight at the incredible views of Lake Lugano and the surrounding mountains.

The hotel is supremely situated for stupendous views. We were so taken with all of the grandeur that we decided to sit and order a glass of champagne and just take a moment to thoroughly enjoy it.

Then to our delight, we saw a large family walking past us carrying lots of large white balloons. They walked to the edge of the property (which sits high on a hilltop overlooking Lake Lugano) and they started to sing a local song while releasing their balloons into the sky. I cannot even express how magical this was. My sister-in-law and I looked at each other and were so overcome with the emotion, that our eyes filled up with tears of appreciation. This was just the beginning of our time here, and for the next three nights, each day was filled with special memories and moments.

The Hotel And History:

Villa Principe Leopoldo hotel is located at the very top of ’Collina d’Oro‘, and it is a very steep hill to get up to it. The hotel used to be a private summer residence for The former private home of German Emperor Wilhelm’s brother in law and was built in the 19th century. Later it was converted into a five-star hotel. When visiting Lugano, and wanting to be placed into a dream luxury vacation, Villa Principe Leopoldo will definitely provide that and more!

Here are my 5 Star Tips for your stay at the Villa Principe Leopoldo, Lugano Switzerland:

Suites:

The Hotel comprises 39 suites which are decorated in golds, light greys, and cool tones. Silky fabrics are utilized throughout the interior. There are tasteful accents and décor that all enhance the light from the large floor to ceiling windows. I stayed in the Panorama One Bedroom Suite that has a lovely couch that looks over the terrace to the lake. Make sure to request the view of the lake as it is simply not to be missed!

Location:

The Hotel is situated closely to the town and lots of shopping, restaurants, and bars, however, you will want to make arrangements to utilize the complimentary shuttle for your trips. Lyn and I did walk into town one morning. It was dangerous walking down the steep hill and there is very little room on the road for pedestrians to be safe. I highly recommend not doing this for safety reasons.

Transportation:

The train station is located within a few minutes of the hotel and the hotel will arrange for complimentary round trip transfers. Be sure to contact them and let them know your arrival and departure times.

Complimentary Breakfast

Included in your stay is a complimentary breakfast. The breakfast buffet was wonderful and the selections were plentiful.

Courtyard and Restaurant

The highlight for me was the courtyard terrace with outdoor seating and a large fountain. Sit at one of the tables near the fountain and order a glass of your favorite cocktail, wine, or in my case, champagne. Then just relax and admire the breathtaking views. This is truly an Always 5 Star moment! Cheers!

Final Thoughts:

I cannot express enough how fantastic this stay was for both my sister-in-law and myself. Important to note that this hotel is part of the Relais & Chateaux* luxury hotels. Not only is the hotel itself abound in luxury, but the Villa Principe Leopoldo, has the most stunning views of the city, the lake, and the surrounding mountains.
